Meet Melanie Reyes.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from the Philippines, and came to Winnipeg, Manitoba in October of 2012.
What is your background/ area of expertise?
I fell in love with website design when ‘HTML’ was first introduced to me at school in 2001. I learned how to use Photoshop in 2003, and ever since then I have refused to use a computer without Photoshop installed on it.
What is your job here?
On my first day at work, my boss wrote a blog post for the company website to welcome me as the newest team member. He had a hard time thinking what my title should be; he didn’t want it to be an ordinary title– he wanted it to sound cool. After some time, he finally decided on “Web Samurai”. As a “Web Samurai” I do website design for the company.
My family and friends know that I’m a huge anime fan so their first reaction was, “Seriously, is it your idea?” and I’m proud to answer, “No, it’s not my idea.” (with a huge smile on my face).
What was your dream job as a child?
I wanted to be a doctor. Where I grew up, when you asked a child what he/she wanted to be when they grow up, they would say “I want to become a doctor.” I don’t know why, but as for me, I probably said that because there was no computer in our house at the time.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I sleep a lot, but if I have spare time, I love watching Japanese animation, Korean Drama and Hollywood movies.
What are your short term goals?
Right now, I’m taking a Software Development program at Red River College. I am aiming to finish it next year (2016).
What are your long term goals?
I want to create a free mobile app! I don’t know what that is yet, but I’ll figure it out after I finish my course. I will earn a passive income from it with the help of advertisers, then I will travel the world.
What inspires/motivates you?
“Be undeniably good, you no longer have to introduce yourself”.
I’m a shy person. I’m not good at talking to people and I’m not even comfortable answering the “what is your area of expertise” question above. I want to become the best, so that someday people will just know who I am, and I won’t need to introduce myself.
Favourite memory on the job so far?
I was able to attend TEDxWinnipeg and for me, it’s a once in a lifetime chance! I remember I always enjoyed watching TEDx clips on youtube when I was in the Philippines. It never crossed my mind that I would actually be in the TEDxWinnipeg theatre! It was a dream I never thought would come true, but it did. Thanks Green Leaf. 🙂
