Meet Shelby Olson.

Where are you from?

Born, raised, and currently living in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

What is your background/ area of expertise?

I’m a high school student (grad 2015) that has found a passion for marketing, social media, and entrepreneurship. Everything I know I’ve learned out of the classroom– whether it be from my own trial and error, online articles and journals, or from my fabulous mentors.

What is your job here?

I joined the team as a marketing apprentice, so that I could learn the ropes while finishing up my senior year of high school. Upon graduation, I was promoted to the “Account Manager and Business Developer” of Green Leaf Social Media.

What was your dream job as a child?

My initial dream job was to be a shoe– yes, a nice little stiletto. Once I realized that there actually are some things in life that can’t be achieved with hard work and perseverance, I decided to settle for plan B: Entomology (bug science). I’m still fascinated by insects, but I think I’ll study them as a side hobby, rather than make it my career.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love being active. In my spare time I play rugby, go running, and try new things like hot yoga, crossfit, and barre. I also love to learn, so you can usually catch me reading an article, taking an online course, or listening to the experts talk.

What are your short term goals?

Right now, my focus is on being a student in everything I do. I want to soak up as much knowledge and experience as possible, so that I can eventually become the teacher. I enrolled in the Asper School of Business to begin in fall of 2015, and will work to complete a double major in marketing and entrepreneurship.

What are your long term goals?

“A goal is a dream with a deadline.” – Napoleon Hill. I want to be featured on the cover of Forbes by the time I’m 25, after having successfully launched my first 3 (minimum) businesses. I want to live my life as a true serial entrepreneur– create and grow my business, sell it, and use the money to help fund my next great startup. More importantly, I want to live a happy, healthy, and exciting life!

What inspires/motivates you?

I’m inspired by successful people and great stories of challenge and perseverance. I’m motivated by that amazing feeling of accomplishment when you can cross an item off your list and have finally achieved something you’ve been working hard towards.

How did you wind up working here?

Well, I first met Joseph (the founder) when I was in grade 10 at a Ramp Up Weekend (Ramp Up Weekend is a business competition where teams go from an idea to MVP in just 55 hours.) Joseph pitched his “vegan bodybuilding” idea product and I jumped on his team to help hammer it out. Over the weekend we got a chance to bond and get to know each other.

About a year later I founded my first business, vAdia Marketing, after completing an online Technology Entrepreneurship course offered by Stanford University. A few months later I made my first two hires.

Joseph heard what I had been doing, and in February of my grade 12 year I received an offer from him to come join his team! I loved working with him before, and decided it would be another great learning opportunity, so I accepted. By the end of March I had officially passed vAdia onto my team, and left to join the Green Leaf Social Media team. It’s a very fun and welcoming work environment, and I’ve learned so much already!
